We might see Yoel Romero fight Bisping at UFC 208
UFC News – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight champion Michael Bisping has already stated that he is down to defend his title against No. 1-ranked contender Yoel Romero sometime next Spring to “silence all the assholes.”
But, according to “Soldier of God,” mixed martial arts (MMA) fans won’t have to wait that long to see it go down, as he hinted that a potential championship showdown against “The Count” is in the works for UFC 208, which is planned for The Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on as early as Jan. 21, 2017.
Romero spilled the beans via Twitter:
If the rumors are true, I’ll be hosting a retirement party on 1/21 @bisping #ynuevo
— Yoel Romero (@YoelRomeroMMA) November 22, 2016
If true, Romero — as well as UFC, dodged a bullet — as “Soldier of God” was handed a two-month suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for leaving the cage shortly after knocking out Chris Weidman via fly knee at UFC 205 (see it here).
That means Romero is eligible to compete again on Jan. 12, 2017, nine days before UFC 208 is set to go down.
If you’re wondering about the “retirement party” statement is in reference to, Bisping recently stated that if and when he coughs up his 185-pound strap, he could very well decide to call it a career. “The Count” successfully defended his strap against Dan Henderson a few months ago at UFC 204, while Romero stamped his ticket to the big dance with a violent knockout win over Chris Weidman at UFC 205 (see that again here).
Their respective performances lead to this not-so friendly interaction, prompting company president Dana White too all but confirm the title fight.
