Verstappen is okay being F1’s “Talking Point”
F1 News – Max Verstappen says it is positive to be a “talking point” in Formula 1, whether comments are good or bad, and insists he has not been affected by criticism over his driving style.
Verstappen, 18, has come under fire for his aggressive approach this season, most notably at the Belgian Grand Prix, following which he was given a “gentle warning” by the FIA.
“I always consider it very positive when you are a talking point in Formula 1,” he said.
“If it’s negative or positive, it doesn’t matter, as long as they talk about you, that’s good!”
On coming under the spotlight, Verstappen added: “The attention doesn’t really affect me; for me the most important thing is to just deliver on the track, and that’s where I’m focusing on.”
Verstappen admitted that, despite winning on his Red Bull debut at the Spanish Grand Prix and adding further podiums, moving up from the junior Toro Rosso team has been a test.
“It’s another level, it’s stepping up… I would say a big step,” he said.
“It’s a bit difficult for me to really comment on that, because if you come in and win your first race [with the team] then maybe some people don’t believe that it’s such a big step, but it is.
“I’m still learning right now, I’m still getting to grips with the car better and better every session, and I think this year is a good learning school to get well prepared for next year.”
