F1 News: Bernie Ecclestone hopes Michael Schumacher’s teenage son makes it all the way to Formula 1.

Mick Schumacher, 17, is stepping up from Formula 4 to the ultra-competitive European F3 series this season, which was the category that launched Max Verstappen and so many other top drivers’ careers. Asked by Germany’s Sport Bild if he wanted to see young Mick on the grid, Ecclestone gave a positive response.

“If he is anywhere near as good as his father, why not,” Ecclestone said. “It would be good for Formula 1 if the name Schumacher was with us again.”

The younger Schumacher made headlines in Sport Bild last week when he declared his own lofty goals for his career moving forward.

“I want to be Formula 1 world champion, like every driver,” Schumacher said. “Formula 3 is the next step for me, and I can hardly wait. This year will certainly be a challenge, but the tests in the past few weeks have shown that the car is great fun to drive.

“This is the category that all the big names have come through. From the point of view of professionalism, it’s a bit closer to Formula 1 and a bit more difficult.”
