Football News – “I think he would be an excellent choice. Maybe it’s time for him, if he has the energy for it” says Double-winning winger turned Ajax director of football.

Arsene Wenger has been told it could be the right time for him to quit Arsenal – and become England manager.

Ex-Gunners favourite Marc Overmars, who was part of boss Wenger ’s double-winning side of 1998, believes the Frenchman is the ideal choice to replace Sam Allardyce as leader of the national team.

Wenger’s Emirates Stadium deal expires at the end of the season and last week he said he was open to managing England in the future.

Overmans, speaking at the ASPIRE4SPORT event, said: “I think that he would be an excellent choice for the English. Maybe it’s time for him, if he has the energy for it.”

When quizzed about the England vacancy last week, Wenger said: “This (Arsenal) has always been my club. But one day if I am free, why not?”

Shamed Allardyce left the Three Lions job after just ONE game in charge after a Telegraph investigation claimed he offered advice on how to “get around” FA rules on player transfers.

Gareth Southgate has been handed the England job on a caretaker basis for the next four games as they weigh up their options.

Steve Bruce, Eddie Howe and Alan Pardew are among the other candidates.

But Overmars’ Dutch compatriot Ronald de Boer said: “Wenger could finish with Arsenal as champions, which would be a nice way of rounding off his time there and then take the England job.”
