Diego Simeone admits having an inconsistent season
Soccer Update: Diego Simeone has conceded that a 2-2 draw with Bilbao this morning will make it difficult for Atletico Madrid to secure automatic qualification to the Champions League.
An 80th minute Antoine Griezmann goal rescued a share of the points for Atleti, who went ahead early through Koke but were put on the back foot when Inigo Lekue and De Marcos found the net either side of half-time.
The Argentine coach said after the dramatic match that he had no regrets for his side.
“I am leaving satisfied as we continue to improve in each game, so that we get results,” Simeone told the media.
“I believe that in the first 30 minutes, and then at the end of the game, were very good from us.
“It was an emotional game and swung back and forward. We could have done more damage at 1-0 up, but we also saw that they could hurt us.”
However, with the Rojiblancos now six points away from third placed Barcelona and seven from Sevilla in second, Simeone says that it will be tough to claim the final automatic spot for next season’s continental showcase.
“We are seven points behind third spot, after an inconsistent first half of the season,” he added.
“Sevilla have a big advantage for getting into the Champions League.”
